WELCOME TO MY NEW TEACHING WEBSITE.This will be a place for my students to download templates and play-along songs, as well as a place for potential students to get an idea of how I teach.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME:I'm a professional performing musician and an experienced teacher. I’ve been teaching private guitar lessons and classes for about 7 years now. I teach from beginner through advanced lessons in many styles including rock, funk, folk, jazz, blues. During lessons I have students who are working on everything from basic chords, scales and reading, to learning solos and advanced chording, from learning their favorite songs, to jazz soloing, music theory and songwriting. Most of my students have been with me for a while, and continue to improve and be excited about the guitar. Enthusiastic references available.
MY GOAL AS A TEACHER is to teach you what you want to learn. Lessons are tailored to the goals of every student, so that everyone can be successful.
MY TEACHING BACKGROUND includes giving private lessons in Philadelphia as well as teaching many students here in Seattle for 7 years. I've taught a number of classes at E.M.P. including their beginning guitar class, and the "jazz in January" classes. This summer I'll be teaching several songwriting classes there as well. I teach Seattle Center Academy's "Rock on Guitar" class every summer, and I've also done lessons at Emerald City Guitars. Last summer I co-taught an incredibly successful intensive Songwriting Workshop with another well known local songwriter Alicia Dara. I'm planning to do another songwriting workshop this coming summer. Please contact me if you're interested in signing up.
AS A PERFORMER I play original songs and covers, both solo and with my band THE X-RAY EYES. Follow the link to song samples and reviews of my playing and songwriting with the band. My more formal musical education includes study at Berklee College of Music in Boston (where I worked on songwriting and guitar performance), and a degree from the University of Pennsylvania. I also studied for a time with well-known Delta blues player Philadelphia Jerry Ricks. Specialties include folk and blues fingerpicking, but I'm well versed in rock styles, funk, and jazz.
David Lavin is a guitar teacher in Seattle, Washington. He is also lead singer for the Seattle band The X Ray Eyes, and the founder of Hercules Records, an Independent Record Label and Recording Studio.
